Young Scientist

Program Aim:

To give talented science students from secondary schools and tertiary institutions the opportunity to work with research scientists in specialized laboratories on plant science projects.

Who are Young Scientists?

Young Scientists are secondary and undergraduate students excelling in their studies and would like to receive academic extension and mentoring with research scientists. Our Young Scientists are usually come to us through teacher nominations from secondary schools throughout Western Australia and international undergraduate exchange programs for top students.

BioGENEius
Young Scientists recieve the opportunity to use their new found skills in novel ways! Here we see students demonstrating micropipetting techniques to Premier of Western Australia Alan Carpenter and Minister for Energy and Resources Mr Fran Logan.
Young Scientists
All students involved in the program recieve mentoring from our leading scientists.
Young Scientist
All students experience cutting edge research tools and techniques in one of the most highly stocked and up to date biotechnology labs in the Southern Hemisphere.

Who do we work with?

The Young Scientist program works with many external organisations including such West Australian Department of Industry and Resources; Beijing Association of Science and Technology and CSIRO to mentor our students for particular projects such as CSIRO Student Research Scheme and safoni aventis International BioGENEius challenge of Western Australia.

This program has resulted in very high success rates for our Young Scientist students projects receiving statewide and international prizes indicating the standard of mentoring, project supervision and of course the students themselves are certainly demonstrating what the new generation of plant scientists have to offer.

If you would like to apply to become a Young Scientist for a short or long term learning experience please contact us at: plantenergy@uwa.edu.au
